Nutmeg is cementing herself as a very sweet and easygoing mare. She is good friends with Apollo, and the two share turnout space during the day and a stall with a half-wall at night.
Nutmeg is up to date on vet and farrier care. She has had her teeth floated, her teats cleaned, and is up to date on her vaccines. She was also dewormed upon arrival, as she arrived with a positive worm load. She is an absolute angel for grooming and while she has some stiffness in her limbs that makes acrobatic maneuvers of her legs difficult, she is quite good about her feet being handled – she has been trimmed once since arriving at SAFE, with her second trim coming up next week, and a 6 week trim schedule set going forward. She gets daily thrush treatments to help combat the thrush all the Graham horses arrived with.
Our vets evaluated her lameness, and found her to be quite off, especially in her hind end. We started her on anti-inflammatory Equioxx to help with her comfort level, and it looks to be making a positive difference. It’s likely that she has been a riding horse in her past, but given her lameness, we will likely adopt her out as a companion.
While Apollo is at work in the arena in the afternoon, Nutmeg has been hanging out with a lucky volunteer or staff member, where she stands relaxed and sweet for grooming and pets.
